Conversation #4 Urban Green Spaces with Tom Fritsch

Tom Fritsch, Principal Landscape Architect, ns227

Urban green spaces have become increasingly important in recent times. Could you tell us a bit about Vividgreen's philosophy when it comes to creating green spaces within cities?

At Vividgreen, we believe that urban green spaces are essential for enhancing the quality of life in cities. Not only do they provide a place for people to relax and connect with nature, but they also have numerous environmental benefits, such as improving air quality and reducing the urban heat island effect. When designing green spaces, we prioritize sustainability and strive to create spaces that are both functional and aesthetically pleasing.

How does your work with Vividgreen incorporate sustainable practices and materials?

Sustainability is at the core of everything we do at Vividgreen. We believe that it is our responsibility as landscape architects to create designs that minimize our impact on the environment. We incorporate sustainable practices and materials with a low carbon footprint where we can, as well as implementing green roofs, balcony planters ,and green walls that improve our everyday environment as well as helping to kerb the heat island effects of inner city developments.

Let's talk about ns227, a development you designed. Can you tell us about the inspiration behind the design?

The inspiration behind ns227 was to create a space that incorporated living elements wherever we could within this urban development. We wanted to prioritize sustainability and incorporate green spaces, both internally and externally. One key feature of the design was the incorporation of Juliette balconies, these  were added to the facade to integrate plant life into the residents everyday environment and to help bring a sense of connection between the residents and their surrounding environment.

The juliette balconies are a unique feature of the ns227 development. Could you tell us how they have affected the overall design?

The juliette balconies have had a significant impact on the facade design of ns227. They are an innovative feature that provides a sense of connection to the surrounding environment. They allow residents to feel as if they are a part of the city, whilst also creating a greener outlook and assisting with maintaining privacy. The design also enhances the aesthetic appeal of the building, creating a cohesive and inviting atmosphere.

Can you talk a bit about the internal common courtyard with the water feature that was included in the ns227 development?

The internal common courtyard was included to provide a green space within the development that could be used by all residents. The water feature creates a calming atmosphere while also providing environmental benefits to the residents. The courtyard is a place where residents can gather and connect with one another, relax and appreciate the calming and green landscaped surroundings all without having to leave the building.

Overall, Tom Fritsch's work with Vividgreen demonstrates a commitment to creating sustainable, innovative landscapes that prioritize the needs of both residents and the environment. The incorporation of both internal and external green spaces, as seen in the ns227 development, is just one example of this philosophy in action.
