Conversation #5 Neighbourhood Talks: Josh Robenstone

Josh Robenston, Local Photographer

I’ve been working around Fitzroy for almost twenty years and the classic adage “while some things change others stay the same” applies in spades.

The balance between grunge and sophisticated, classic and fresh has always been one of the best aspects of this area. Gertrude Street has some great shopping including Havn, Pickings and Parry, record stores galore, amazing food and drink options from the Builders Arms, and my family’s favourite Colombian Arepa and coffee spot, Sonido!

The old pubs and their iconic little front bars are truly unique to Fitzroy. The Standard, the Union and the Napier have all remained unchanged after many years and are as iconically Melbourne as anything.

As a photographer, I find Fitzroy completely inspiring with its diversity, architectural landscape and proximity to the CBD. Its inner-city pockets along with its eclectic composition make for fantastic canvas. You could say it's the cultural heart of our city, and it’s not often I walk down a back street here and walk away without a captured moment worth saving.
